Explore York

Description:

Books on Prescription is a scheme offering high quality self-help books. They are available to borrow from libraries. GP's and health professionals can also prescribe titles in the collection. 

The self-help books help with a range of commonly experienced mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety amd stress.

You can be given a book prescription by your GP.

Take it to your local library, where you will find our Books on Prescription collection, or ask a member of staff for help.

BOP collections are located in Acomb, Dunnington, Haxby, Huntington, Tang Hall, Strensall, Sycamore House and York Explore.

If you are not already a member of the library, you can join immediately for free.

Garden flower beds

Description:

Gateway Action's "Dig-it" scheme sends young volunteers to help people look after their gardens. Supervised by a responsible, competent adult the volunteers will come once a week and work to an agreed programme. And tidy up afterwards! We are especially keen to hear from people who want help growing fruit and vegetables.

Duke of Edinburgh Awards

Description:

The Duke of Edinburgh Inclusion Group is specifically for young people with disabilities or/and additional needs. This is a city wide Inclusive Duke of Edinburgh Award group for young people 14+ who would like to do the bronze award and we will adjust the tasks to suit each person’s individual skills and needs. There are four sections to the award: Skills: This could be a hobby or interest. Volunteering: This could be collecting and recycling things. Physical Activity: This can be any physical activity or sport you take part in. Expedition: We do this as a group, which we do in the school holidays or at weekends.

Description:

Reading for Fun are a group of volunteers and adults with learning difficulties who meet up on York Explore Library each week to read, chat and generally socialise. We are always interested in meeting new member and exploring what they are interested in. We meet every Tuesday.

We run practical conservation activities several times a week throughout the year. The tasks are varied, so there are always opportunities for volunteers to get involved with the projects and to learn new skills. By coming to volunteer with us, not only will you be able to try out new skills, but will also be able to keep fit, improve an area of the local community and meet other people who enjoy being outdoors.
